The Southeast Vipassana Center, Dhamma Patāpa – “The Majesty of Dhamma” – is one of more than 270 Centers worldwide offering courses in Vipassana Meditation as taught by S.N. Goenka and his Assistant Teachers in the tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin.
Nestled in a secluded rural setting among sixty acres of pine, oak, and mixed hardwood forest, the Center sites in Wayne County in southeastern Georgia, ten miles south of the small town of Jesup. It lies roughly 70 miles southwest of Savannah, 90 miles north of Jacksonville, Florida, and 250 miles southeast of Atlanta – making it an ideal meditation environment for Vipassana students throughout the region.
The first Vipassana course in the southeastern US was held in Stark, Florida in May of 1993, followed by a second course in December. From 1994 to 2007, Camp Marywood in Switzerland, Florida, was rented twice a year for ten-day courses, with additional courses held at rented facilities in Atlanta and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Throughout those fourteen years, Vipassana students in the region hoped for a permanent Center that could offer courses year-round.
In 2004, the Southeast Vipassana Association was founded, and a Center Search committee was formed to find suitable land for a meditation center. The search began in northern and central Florida before expanding into Georgia. After evaluating many sites, the property was purchased in December 2005. Phase I construction began shortly thereafter and was completed in early 2008, with the first courses starting in March of that year.
The three initial buildings accommodated thirty students. The main building housed a meditation hall along with residences for fifteen women and fifteen men. The dining hall and kitchen building included an office, an Assistant Teacher room, and server quarters for four women and four men. A temporary building rounded out the campus, providing space for registration and other needs.
By summer of 2009, two long-term server cabins – one for women, one for men, each housing up to four servers – had been completed. A landscaping and beautification project followed in the winter of 2010, adding trees and flowering plants throughout the grounds.
Phase II expansion began in August 2010 and was completed in 2011, nearly doubling student capacity to close to 60 with new accommodations, two Assistant Teacher residences, dining annexes, and a new meditation hall. Construction continued with the addition of two four-bedroom quad residences – one per gender – each accommodating six students, featuring private bathrooms, including mediation cells, and one accessible room. Further growth followed with the construction of eight-bedroom private residences, built alternately for each gender. As of 2026, the Center offers 36 private rooms for each gender.
Looking ahead, the Southeast Vipassana Center will continue to grow around a new central meditation hall, with updated dining and kitchen facilities, additional residences connected by covered and screened walkways for protection from weather and insects, and dedicated housing for course managers and servers. The completed campus will sit at the highest elevation on the property, surrounded by forest on all sides – a quiet sanctuary fully in keeping with the essence of Dhamma Patāpa.
