First LGBTQ+ Course

 Was Held in May 2024

After months of planning and preparation, Dhamma Patapa held its first course for the LGBTQ+ community in May of 2024. Forty-seven students of all genders and sexual orientations attended this course and worked seriously together throughout the ten days. A senior assistant teacher, who identifies as part of this community, conducted the course which was extremely supportive for the students.

Many LGBTQ+ students – particularly those who identify as nonbinary, transgender, or genderqueer – have historically felt unwelcome at Vipassana centers because of the binary nature of this tradition. To help address this issue, Center staff and servers removed references to gender from the campus signage for the course. Additionally, each side of the campus offered dedicated housing for nonbinary students who preferred to be in a nonbinary room. All servers received a pre-course training on how to be most supportive of the LGBTQ+ community, including information on pronoun usage and the importance of gender-neutral language.

A post-course survey was distributed to all students and servers, and these are some of the aspects they found most beneficial about the LGBTQ+ course:

“The sense of freedom! I felt unaware of my gender.”

“The opportunity to experience Vipassana among other LGBTQ+ people was so deeply meaningful.”

“The fact that this was an LGBTQ+ course made me feel safe and fully embraced by the environment.”

“Feeling like my community was supported and seen.”

After the course ended, there was a request to create a WhatsApp group for LGBTQ+ old students to build community and have Dhamma-related discussions. If you are an LGBTQ+ old student and would like to join this group, please click on this link: .

Dhamma Patapa intends to offer an LGBTQ+ course every year moving forward. If you are interested in sitting or serving these future courses, please check the course schedule page.

International Vipassana Newsletter

The April 2022 issue of the International Vipassana Newsletter is available online. For your reading in this issue:

Feature Article:  Dawn of a New Millennium In previous issues, we chronicled Goenkaji’s teaching journey decade by decade. From this issue, we will focus on one year at a time, starting with the pivotal year 2000.

First Black Heritage Course in the USA On January 3, 2010, the first worldwide African Heritage Course concluded in India at Dhamma Paṭṭana, the center next to the Global Pagoda. Goenkaji strongly welcomed this initiative because, in his words, “White, black or brown, a human being is a human being.” His wish was for people of every background to experience liberation from suffering. In August 2010, Dhamma Dīpa in the UK held another African Heritage Course.
